How to Build a Sphere in Minecraft (Layer by Layer)

How to Build a Sphere in Minecraft (Layer by Layer)
Quick answer

A sphere is one of the most impressive things you can build in Minecraft. Glass bubbles under the sea, planets in a space world, giant orbs on top of towers – they all start with the same trick: a sphere is just a stack of circles. In this guide you’ll learn how to plan one, how to build it without mistakes, and how many blocks to collect.

How a Minecraft sphere works

Because blocks are cubes, a sphere is built from horizontal slices. The bottom slice is a small disc. Each slice above it is a slightly bigger circle until you reach the middle (the widest layer), then the circles get smaller again until the top. A sphere that is 21 blocks wide has 21 layers, and every one of them is a different circle.

The top half is a mirror of the bottom half. Layer 1 and layer 21 are the same, layer 2 and layer 20 are the same, and so on. That means you only need to learn half of the pattern.

Pick the right size

  • 7–11 blocks: decorations, orbs on pillars, small tree canopies.
  • 15–21 blocks: a cosy room inside, small glass bases.
  • 31–41 blocks: underwater bases, planets, big landmarks.
  • 51+ blocks: mega builds – plan with a schematic.

Odd sizes (21, 31, 41) have a single centre block, which makes it easier to line up doors, floors and pillars.

How many blocks do you need?

211,0824,945
312,38215,515

Hollow spheres use a fraction of the blocks, so build hollow unless the sphere is a small decoration.

Step-by-step: building a sphere in survival

  1. Choose the centre and write down its X and Z coordinates (press F3 on Java, or turn on “Show coordinates” in Bedrock).
  2. Build a guide pillar from where the bottom will be, as tall as the sphere is wide. It shows the height of every layer.
  3. Build the middle layer first. It’s the widest circle, so it shows the full size. Stand on scaffolding next to the pillar.
  4. Work outward from the middle. Build the layer above and the layer below, one block at a time, following the blueprint.
  5. Close the top and bottom with the small discs.
  6. Remove the pillar and scaffolding from the inside, then add floors, lights and doors.

Tips for a cleaner sphere

  • Plan with a cheap block like dirt or wool, then replace it with glass or your final material.
  • Use scaffolding – you can drop down instantly by sneaking.
  • For a glass sphere underwater, build it first, then remove the water inside with sponges or by filling it with sand and digging it out.
  • Small spheres have flat spots on the top and sides. That’s normal – larger spheres look rounder.

The fast way: WorldEdit or Litematica

With WorldEdit (Java), stand where you want the centre and type //hsphere glass 15 for a hollow sphere 31 blocks wide. In survival, download a .litematic file from our sphere generator and Litematica will show a hologram of every block for you to fill in.

Making a sphere with commands

Vanilla Minecraft has no sphere command. On Java, WorldEdit’s //sphere and //hsphere place one instantly. On Bedrock, you need a world-edit style add-on or a behaviour pack; otherwise build it from layer blueprints.

Half spheres and domes

A half sphere is simply the top (or bottom) half of a sphere – that’s a dome. Use the dome generator, which starts from the widest ring.

The easiest way to make a sphere

  1. Pick an odd size (15 or 21).
  2. Build the middle ring first.
  3. Build two cross-shaped arches over the top (north–south and east–west) as a frame.
  4. Fill in each layer between the arches using the blueprint.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a perfect sphere in Minecraft?

Build it as a stack of circles. Start with the widest middle layer, then build the layers above and below using a sphere blueprint until you close the top and bottom.

How many blocks is a 21 block sphere?

A hollow 21-block sphere needs 1,082 blocks. A solid one needs 4,945 blocks.

What is the easiest sphere size to build?

Odd sizes such as 15, 21 or 31 are easiest because they have a single centre block.

How do you make a sphere in Minecraft with commands?

Use WorldEdit on Java: //sphere for solid or //hsphere for hollow. Vanilla Minecraft has no sphere command.

How do you make a half sphere in Minecraft?

Build only the top half of a sphere – a dome – starting from the widest ring.
