How to Build a Dome in Minecraft (Roofs, Biodomes & More)
A dome turns a plain round tower or hall into a landmark. Cathedrals, observatories, biodomes and igloos all use the same shape: the top half of a sphere. This tutorial shows you how to plan the size, build each layer and finish it cleanly.
Understanding the dome shape
A dome starts with a wide circle at the base. Every layer above it is a slightly smaller circle until the top closes. Its height is about half its width – a 31-block dome is 16 blocks tall. The lower layers are almost vertical and the top layers are almost flat, which is why domes look so smooth from a distance.
Our dome generator shows every layer from the base ring to the top, with block counts and a 3D preview.

Choosing the size
- 9–13 blocks: gazebos, igloos, small chapels.
- 17–25 blocks: observatories, tower roofs, mosque domes.
- 31–51 blocks: glass biodomes and big halls.
If the dome sits on a round tower, use exactly the same diameter as the tower so the first layer lines up with the wall.
| Diameter | Height | Hollow blocks |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | 6 | 153 |
| 17 | 9 | 369 |
| 21 | 11 | 569 |
| 31 | 16 | 1,233 |
| 51 | 26 | 3,393 |
Step-by-step dome tutorial
- Build the base ring. This is layer 1 – the widest circle. Place it on top of your walls or on the ground.
- Add layer 2 directly on top. It’s the same size or just one block smaller on the curve. Follow the blueprint carefully here, because the low layers change slowly.
- Keep stepping inward. From the middle of the dome upward, each layer shrinks faster. Build the steep lower part from outside, and the flatter top from inside.
- Close the top with a small filled disc.
- Add details: a lantern or spire on top, a ring of stairs around the base, windows in the lower layers.
Best blocks for domes
- Glass or tinted glass for biodomes and observatories.
- Copper for a roof that slowly turns green.
- Quartz, white concrete or calcite for mosques and capitol buildings.
- Deepslate tiles or dark prismarine for gothic and fantasy builds.
Common mistakes
- Making the base a different size from the tower below.
- Rushing the first few layers – most dome errors start there.
- Forgetting light inside. A dark dome spawns mobs at night.
Building a dome with WorldEdit
WorldEdit has no dome command, but you can run //hsphere glass 15, select the bottom half, and use //set air. Or download the dome as a .litematic file from the dome generator.
Survival method: support arches
Many builders find it easier to build two arches first:
- Lay out the base circle on the ground with temporary blocks.
- Build a half-circle arch from north to south, then another from east to west, crossing at the top. These are the profile of your dome.
- Fill the gaps between the arches ring by ring, moving one block in and one or two blocks up per ring near the top.
The arches act as a guide, so the dome stays round even without a screen next to you.
Lighting inside a dome
Hang lanterns on chains from the top, hide glowstone or sea lanterns behind slabs around the base, or use a ring of froglights. A glass dome needs light inside or mobs will spawn on the floor at night.
Bedrock and console
Domes are built the same way on Bedrock. Use the PNG blueprint from the dome generator on your phone while you build.
Frequently asked questions
How tall should a Minecraft dome be?
About half its width. A 21-block dome is 11 blocks tall and a 31-block dome is 16 blocks tall.
How many blocks are in a dome?
A hollow 31-block dome uses 1,233 blocks and a hollow 21-block dome uses 569 blocks.
Can you make a dome on a square building?
Yes. Make the dome as wide as the building, then cover the corners with slabs or stairs.
What is the easiest way to build a dome in survival?
Build two crossing arches over the base first, then fill in the rings between them.
How do you light a glass dome?
Hang lanterns on chains from the top and hide light blocks around the base so the floor stays above light level 0.
