What is a Minecraft dome?

A dome is the top half of a sphere. It starts with a wide circle at the base and gets smaller with every layer until it closes at the top. A 31-block dome is 16 blocks tall, because the height is about half the width.

The generator shows the dome layer by layer. Layer 1 is the base – the widest ring, which sits on your walls or the ground. Move the slider up to see each smaller ring.

How to use the dome generator

  1. Measure your base. If the dome goes on a round tower, use the same diameter as the tower. Find it with the circle generator.
  2. Pick outline or thick. Outline is a one-block shell. Thick (2–3 blocks) looks more solid from inside and lets you mix materials.
  3. Build from the base up. Build layer 1 on top of your walls, then move up one block and build layer 2, and so on.
  4. Check in 3D to see how the finished dome looks before you start.
Tip: the lowest layers of a dome are almost vertical, and the top layers are almost flat. Build the steep lower layers from the outside and the flat top layers from the inside.

Putting a dome on a tower or building

For a round tower, use the same diameter for the tower and the dome. The dome’s first layer then sits exactly on top of the wall.

For a square building, make the dome as wide as the building, or a few blocks smaller and build a ring of slabs or stairs around the edge to cover the gap. Mosques, cathedrals and capitol buildings often put a dome on a short round “drum” wall first – try a 3–5 block tall circle under the dome.

Dome build ideas

  • Glass biodome: 31–51 blocks, over a custom biome, a farm or a mob-free garden.
  • Observatory: 17–25 blocks with a thick wall and a slot of glass for the “telescope”.
  • Cathedral or mosque dome: 21–41 blocks on a drum wall, with a small dome or spire on top.
  • Gazebo: 9–13 blocks on fence or wall posts.
  • Igloo: a small 9–11 block dome of snow blocks with a tunnel entrance.
  • Underwater dome base: a glass dome on the ocean floor, drained with sponges.

Building a dome with WorldEdit

WorldEdit has no dome command, but you can make one in two steps:

//hsphere glass 15       make a hollow sphere (31 wide)
//pos1 and //pos2 select the bottom half
//set air                 remove it

Or download the .litematic file from the generator and paste it with Litematica’s paste mode (creative), or build it by hand with the hologram (survival).

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a dome in Minecraft?

A dome is half a sphere. Choose Dome, set the diameter, then build from Layer 1 (the widest base ring) upward, one layer per block of height.

How tall is a Minecraft dome?

About half its width. A 21-block dome is 11 blocks tall, a 31-block dome is 16 blocks tall, and a 51-block dome is 26 blocks tall.

How many blocks do I need for a dome?

A hollow 21-block dome needs 569 blocks, a hollow 31-block dome needs 1,233 and a hollow 51-block dome needs 3,393. See the chart for more sizes.

What is the best block for a dome roof?

Glass for biodomes and observatories, copper or prismarine for a green aged look, quartz or white concrete for mosques and capitol buildings, and terracotta or deepslate tiles for medieval roofs.

Can I make an oval dome?

Use WorldEdit with //hsphere and three different radii (for example //hsphere glass 20,12,15) and remove the bottom half, or build an oval base with the oval generator and shrink it each layer.
