Where to find armadillos

Armadillos spawn in savanna and badlands biomes, including their plateau and eroded variants. They were added after winning the 2023 mob vote.

Feeding and breeding

• Feed two adults a spider eye each to make a baby.
• Feed a baby spider eyes to make it grow up faster.
• Spider eyes drop from spiders and cave spiders and can be found in some chests.

Getting armadillo scutes

Use a brush on an armadillo to get a scute without hurting it. Armadillos also drop a scute on their own every few minutes. Six scutes craft wolf armor, which protects a tamed wolf and can be dyed.

Behaviour

Armadillos roll into a ball when a player is sprinting nearby, when a mob is close or when they get hurt. While rolled up they take less damage. Wait a moment and they unroll.

Simple armadillo farm

Fence a small savanna area, breed a few armadillos with spider eyes, and brush them regularly. Light the area so spiders don’t spawn inside – you’ll be collecting spider eyes from a spider farm instead.

Making wolf armor

Place six armadillo scutes in the crafting grid: one in the top-left corner, three across the middle row and one in each bottom corner. Use the armor on your tamed wolf.

How far will an armadillo follow you?

Hold a spider eye and armadillos follow you from about 10 blocks away in Java Edition and 16 blocks in Bedrock. Each spider eye fed to a baby speeds up its growth by 10%.

Why spider eyes?

Real armadillos eat insects and spiders, so Mojang chose spider eyes as their food. It also makes them a little harder to breed early in the game.

What attacks armadillos?

Hostile mobs such as zombies and skeletons can hurt them, but armadillos roll up when danger is near and take much less damage while rolled. They are passive and can’t be tamed.

What do armadillos drop?

They drop an armadillo scute every few minutes on their own, or when you brush them. Killing them gives only experience – brushing is better.
