How to Build a Tower in Minecraft (Round & Square)
Towers are the easiest way to add height and character to a base. This guide covers both square and round towers, plus stairs, floors and roofs. For design inspiration, see our list of 12 round tower designs.
Round or square?
Square towers are quick and great for early survival. Round towers look far better but need a circle blueprint. With the circle generator a round tower takes only a few extra minutes.
Pick a size
- 7 blocks: watchtower, early game.
- 9–11 blocks: wizard tower or lighthouse.
- 13–17 blocks: castle tower with spiral stairs.
- 21+ blocks: keep with full rooms.
A tower looks best when it is about three times taller than it is wide.
Step by step
- Build the base ring (or square) and check it from above.
- Raise the walls to the first floor height, about 5–6 blocks.
- Add a floor and leave a 2×2 gap for stairs or a ladder.
- Repeat for each floor.
- Add windows in a regular pattern, and trim with a darker block every floor.
- Finish the roof: a cone of shrinking circles, a dome, or battlements.
Stairs inside a tower
In towers 13 blocks or wider, a spiral staircase around a central pillar works well. In thinner towers, use ladders or scaffolding along one wall.
Roof ideas
- Cone: circles of 9, 7, 5, 3, 1 – two layers each.
- Dome: use the dome generator with the same width as the tower.
- Battlements: every other block on the top ring.
Adding a spiral staircase
Use the spiral staircase generator to plan stairs around a central pillar. A radius of 5 with a 3×3 pillar fits a 13-block tower.
Easy survival tower
In early survival, build a 5×5 cobblestone tower with a ladder in one corner. Put a bed, crafting table, furnace and chests on the top floor and light the inside – it’s a safe base for your first nights.
Modern tower
Use white concrete corners, glass panes between them and flat roofs. Add scaffolding or iron bars for an industrial look.
Following a blueprint layer by layer
Round towers are easiest with a generator: set the diameter and height in the circle generator and use the .litematic file or layer view to place every block.
Frequently asked questions
How tall should a Minecraft tower be?
About three times its width. A 13-block tower looks good at around 35–40 blocks tall.
What is the best block for a tower?
Stone bricks for castles, deepslate for dark fantasy towers, and white concrete or quartz for modern towers.
How do you build a tower in Minecraft Bedrock?
The same way as Java: plan the footprint, build the walls in sections, add floors and a roof.
Our free generators show every block, count materials in stacks and export .litematic files.
