What is a Minecraft oval?

An oval (or ellipse) is a stretched circle. It has two sizes: a width and a depth. When both are the same, you get a circle. Ovals are perfect for anything that should be longer than it is wide: arenas, stadiums, racetracks, ponds, ship decks and the curved tops of arches.

How to use the oval generator

  1. Set the width and depth. Use the two sliders or type the numbers. Both go up to 256 blocks.
  2. Choose a fill. Outline for walls and fences, Thick for arena walls with seating, Filled for floors and ponds.
  3. Add height if needed. Set a height above 1 to make an oval tower or wall. The total block count updates.
  4. Build one quarter, then mirror it. Like circles, ovals are symmetrical, so the four quarters are copies of each other.
Tip: keep both sizes odd (or both even) so the oval has a clean centre line in both directions.

How to build an arch with an oval

For an arch or tunnel entrance, generate an oval with the width of the opening and twice the height you want. Then build only the top half, standing up on its side. A 15 × 9 oval makes a nice 15-wide, 5-tall arch. Use a filled oval and remove the inside for a thick stone arch.

How to build an arena or colosseum

  1. Generate the outer wall: for example 61 × 45 with a thick wall of 3.
  2. Generate a smaller oval for the fighting floor: for example 41 × 25, filled.
  3. Build rings of seats between them, each ring 2 blocks smaller and 1 block lower than the one outside it.
  4. Add arches on the outside wall every few blocks for the classic colosseum look.

WorldEdit oval command

//cyl stone 22,16 1      filled oval, 45 × 33, 1 high
//hcyl stone 22,16 10    hollow oval wall, 10 high

The two numbers are the radius on the X and Z axes. WorldEdit only makes odd sizes, so a radius of 22 gives 45 blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make an oval in Minecraft?

Choose Oval, set the width and depth, then build one quarter of the pattern and mirror it into the other three quarters.

What is the difference between an oval and an ellipse?

In Minecraft building they mean the same thing: a circle stretched in one direction.

How do I make an oval arch?

Generate an oval with the opening width and twice the arch height, then build only the top half standing on its side.

How big should a Minecraft arena be?

A small PvP arena works at about 31 × 21. A colosseum looks best at 61 × 45 or larger.

Can I make an oval tower?

Yes. Set the height above 1. The block count multiplies by the height and the .litematic file includes every layer.
